On the 2024 Green Product Award in Berlin, an event highlighting the most sustainable innovations, attended by 1,500 professionals from 60 countries, Qwarzo won the award in the Packaging category for its efforts in proposing sustainable solutions to enhance product circularity and offer a replacement for plastic.
The Green Product Award is an international award celebrating sustainable products and services since 2013. It aims to highlight the most innovative and eco-friendly projects fostered by startups and established companies in a range of categories, including Architecture, Beauty and Self-Care, Building Components, New Materials, Consumer Goods, Fashion, Freestyle, Interior and Lifestyle, Children, Cooking, Mobility, Packaging, Sports and Work Environment.
The main award ceremony was held on April 30th, 2024, at the Felleshus of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin and brought together 1,500 professionals from 60 countries.
The official award panel acknowledged the revolutionary impact of Qwarzo® by stating, “Qwarzo® offers a plastic-free coating alternative to apply on a range of materials, improving functionality without compromising recyclability and compostability, a breakthrough for the packaging industry.”

Our technology based on silica, one of the most plentiful materials available in nature, offers a coating alternative free from plastics and microplastics. To wit, Qwarzo® coats paper fibers with a natural armor-like barrier, improving their strength and performance. The coated paper, featured with an undetectable plastic-free barrier layer, becomes stronger and more resistant to grease, water, heat, and vapor. This process does not alter the recyclability and compostability of the substrate: products enhanced with Qwarzo® can be recycled as paper or disposed of as organic waste.
Qwarzo® technology was born from an insightful combination of technical expertise and passion for research. It proves to be highly flexible and adaptable to various uses and different applications. In the food industry, it wraps paper to make straws, ice cream spoons, coffee stirrers, plates and cups; in packaging, is used for cases, boxes and more.
Awards are piling up fast. Lately, Qwarzo® has been nominated among the Tocco Award shortlisted finalists for the FUTURE VISIONARY MATERIAL category and has received a special mention as Innovative Material by Packaging Première’s Avant-garde 2024. Moreover, the technology is attracting increasing attention from top-tier brands in the packaging industry.
